Osteopathy is a system of healthcare that has a professional focus on the management of pain and the treatment of conditions that affect the body. Practitioners combine a developed sense of touch with an understanding of functional anatomy, to assess for patterns of strain. These patterns of strain may be due to trauma, sustained poor postures or other stressors. Osteopaths then have a wide-range of hands-on techniques that are used to help alleviate these painful dysfunctions, commonly found in the joints, muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissue.

Osteopathy is a hands on manual therapy. Techniques used by Victoria on pregnant women, teenages and adults generally include a combination of stretches or massage; mobilisation or manipulation of specific joints; fascial unwinding and / or Osteopathy in the cranial field. Techniques for newborns, infants and younger children are generally confined to Osteopathy in the cranial field; gentle fascial unwinding and/or slow rhythmic movements and articulations. As per Osteopathy Australia’s position statement, there is no ‘cracking’ techniques performed on children under the age of 7 years.

On both adults and children, some intra-oral techniques or assessments may be performed if required. An example of this would be treating jaw dysfunction or checking a babies mouth for adequate tongue function.  As these can be considered invasive techniques, consent will be sought and gloves used for hygenic purposes.

The Osteopathic treatment is an individually tailored program, if there are any concerns about particular techniques, please talk to Victoria about these.
